808 State : Quadrastate Remastered - posted 01/04/2008
\"Quadrastate\" completes the popular re-release trilogy on Rephlex, which also included the highly acclaimed \"Newbuild\" and \"Prebuild\" albums (and was accompanied by the successful \"Acid House Mixes\" of New Order). Originally released on Creed Records, these recordings were born in Manchester in the months after the second Summer of Love, in 1988/9. These tracks were hugely influential to the popular electronic dance music explosion that soon followed all around the world. And notably this is the album where we originally heard the international hit song, \"Pacific\".
As with many producer teams, the combination of influences and characteristics is what makes the sound unique. \"Quadrastate\" still has a fresh sound; incredibly bouncy basslines, pioneering use of breakbeats and all the energy and inspiration of analog-digital-hybrid jams.
Other classic 808 State reissues & remasters are planned later this year by ZTT. Graham Massey (in the guise of Massonix) will be supporting Autechre on their USA /Japanese tour in April and, after a long hiatus, the full 808 State live band will be playing festivals and gigs throughout 2008 (Warehouse Project MCR, Primavera festival Barcelona, Gatecrasher Festival, Bestival etc).

BLOC WEEKEND 23 - 25 MARCH 2007 : is back for 2008! - posted 02/10/2007
BLOC WEEKEND 14 - 16 March 2008
Pontin\'s Holiday Park, Hemsby, Gt Yarmouth, Norfolk, UK.
www.blocweekend.com
BLOC is big and bold and bad and BACK.
The galaxy\'s premier three day indoor underground electronics showcase is set to land in a holiday park on the East Coast of the United Kingdom on 14th March 2008.
BLOC 2007 raised the bar for European festivals, with its immense lineup headed by electronic godfathers Autechre, alt-hip-hop originator Kool Keith and the mysterious, ghoulish Rhythm and Sound. The tickets were quickly hot, scarce property - every last one was snapped up six weeks before the festival\'s opening night. Radio 1 broadcast the highlights over two shows to the nation and beyond, firmly cementing BLOC\'s position as one of the UK\'s premier underground electronic festivals.
BLOC 2008 is set build on this formidable legacy, developing a lineup that will coax the finest, the most reclusive, the most stupefyingly outstanding acts from the far-flung reaches of the planet to make a generation\'s head spin once again.
BLOC will be held in Pontins Holiday Park, Hemsby, Norfolk from March 14th - 16th 2008. As all BLOC devotees will know, all of the 2,500 BLOC family are housed in apartments surrounding the three enormous central music arenas. There are no weather worries and all mod cons. Ticket price includes this accommodation. The music is twenty four hour, the party is relentless and the music is, well, sublime.
www.blocweekend.com is now online - stand by for mind-shattering lineup announcements, news, propoganda and lies.
BLOC...is back.

SERATO presents : DJ Godfather - posted 21/04/2007
Serato presents the world’s first ever completely digital mix series using Scratch LIVE technology and tracks only available digitally, starting off with a sound straight from Detroit. Comments Scott Bulloch, Marketing Manager for Serato Audio Research. “We are looking forward to creating this platform for DJs to expose new and exciting music across the world and what better way to start than with Detroit’s finest, DJ Godfather.” On the first Serato presents mix, DJ Godfather shows off his ghetto tech, booty styles, coming right at you with hard hitting lyrics and fast, dirty beats and basslines. This is a mouth watering collection, mixing up elements from techno, electro, Miami Bass and hip hop, Godfather embraces the Detroit ghetto styles and throws them back out to the people of the world, inviting them to shake their booties and grind to the bad-ass beats. In addition the mix is given a live club feel, hosted and MCed by Omega.
The mix will be available through www.junodownload.com exclusively from 30 APRIL and on general release 14 MAY 2007.

TWO LONE SWORDSMEN IN : WRONG MEETING! - posted 08/03/2007
Following on from the success of their last album, From the Double Gone Chapel, Two Lone Swordsmen return and the evolution of their sound continues, as Andrew Weatherall says: “It’s a real extension of the last one. And it’s still got that wonky charm we do so well, but it’s a bit more structured.”
Now fully immersed as a live band with cohort Keith Tenniswood on guitar, what’s particularly striking about Wrong Meeting is Weatherall’s growth in stature as not only a singer and front man but also as a sharp wordsmith of note. As a man often quoted for his quick, acerbic wit, here we find tales of love and rejection on their way to Satanville, ripping open a seething underbelly of mistrust, tension, revenge and redemption along the way. Like Robert Johnson’s appointment with the devil, Two Lone Swordsmen find themselves in a clandestine engagement at Dante’s Inferno and pull up a stool whilst St. Nick pours from the bottle and take a hearty swig.
Wrong Meeting is released as a limited vinyl only box set on 16th April on Rotters Golf Club. A second part to the album with all new tracks will be released on CD only 6th June.
BLOC WEEKEND 23 - 25 MARCH 2007 : Autechre to headline! - posted 10/01/2007
Bloc Weekend are extremely excited to announce the addition of electronic legends Autechre as headline act on the already impressive three day line-up.
Autechre are quite simply one of the most important electronic outfits ever. Consisting of music pioneers Rob Brown and Sean Booth, they have, over the last two decades, created a distinctive sound ranging from the intricately melodic to chaotic industrial beats and beyond. Often reluctantly pigeonholed under the ‘IDM’ banner, Autechre are above such simple categorisation and create a sound like no other, along with mouth watering, visually mind blowing live shows.
Since releasing their first album Incunabula in 1993, they have released seven more electronic masterpieces, the most recently being Untitled in 2005. The earlier albums would comfortably fit in to a club environment, with easy going 4/4 patterns, but as time has moved on, so too have Autechre, creating a more experimental approach in their later albums focusing very much on complex rhythms, manipulated percussion and clusters of tweaked electronic sound. To many it has simply been described as unlistenable, but to those who have warmed to Autechre, it is a sound of genius and delight, displaying varying atmospheric tracks and intense techno trips.
It’s a good bet that even in 100 years time Autechre’s sonic tapestries will still be regarded not as a quaintly nostalgic reminder of yesterday, or a museum of obsolete technology, but as uncompromising sound art, skittering across the years with timeless, head-scratching efficacy. It will speak of today – and, chances are, it may still sound like the future…Now you too can catch their electronic genius at this year’s first ever Bloc Weekender!

Arena 1: The BassBloc
With its heavy emphasis (and emphasis on the heavy) on the emerging new urban sounds of gun-funk, ghettotech and dubstep and its reckless unleashing of the power of jungle, drum’n’bass and ravecore the BassBloc will be established as the last word in dangerous, bass-heavy power tunes.

HAWTIN ON DVD : Slices Special "Pioneers of Electronic Music" Vol. 1 - posted 02/11/2006
The launch of a new DVD special series, “Slices - Pioneers of Electronic Music” celebrates in detail the life and work of prominent artists or “pioneers” in the global electronic music scene.
The first edition (Part 1) is a documentary film based on electronic producer, performer and industry icon, Richie Hawtin. The film draws from the important stages and events in Richie Hawtin\'s personal and artistic life, revealing the journey of an introverted and transplanted computer-minded teen that develops by way of Detroit’s radio and records fuelled by pure driven passion into a successful techno-entrepreneur and global DJ entertainer.
“Slices” examines a career that has now spanned almost twenty years, exploring his role in the Detroit techno scene, co-founding and establishing the legendary Plus 8 label with John Acquaviva and the international cult that sprang up around his distinct alter ego, Plastikman. Friends, family, colleagues and Richie Hawtin himself tell their stories relating early DJ experiences, his first encounters with role models like Derrick May and Jeff Mills, his move to New York City and then later to Berlin, and much more.
Assembling an extensive archive of previously unpublished photos and exclusive interviews, the film provides an extraordinary insight into the life and career (so far) of one of the most successful activists in techno history: Richie Hawtin.

THE ROTTERS RETURN : Weatherall's first 'solo' single - posted 19/09/2006
The Rotters Golf Club returns with a brace of dastardly fairway daisy cutters. First off we have the first ever ?solo? release from Andrew Weatherall. We say that because it is the very first release he has ever deemed fit to be issued under his name and his name alone. ?Bullet Catcher?s Apprentice? is a career-scanning yet forward-thinking behemoth of a release, taking clear sonic cues from his status as a dance, techno & house phenomenon whilst skillfully acknowledging his grandly professed love of protest music - Rockabilly, Soul, Rock ?n? Roll - from the mid 20th Century.
Then we have a rude plundering of the vaults as the first Two Lone Swordsmen missions are compiled and assorted under the banner ?Emissions From The Archive Vol.1? This collection, hand-picked by co-creator Andrew Weatherall, serves as the first in a series of reissues highlighting the classic yet sadly long out-of-print releases on the Emissions audio output label. This edition focuses on releases by the influential Two Lone Swordsmen, with tracks taken from the landmark Fifth and Tenth Missions, Swimming not Skimming and Stockwell Steppas albums. As Weatherall himself notes, ?although the Swordsmen process has changed radically over ten years, strong echoes of this early work can be heard in the Swordsmen?s current activity?.
A new Two Lone Swordsmen album follows in early 2007.
ANDREW WEATHERALL ? BULLET CATCHER?S APPRENTICE (RGC011) RELEASE DATE: 23 OCTOBER 2006

THE WAREHOUSE PROJECT : venue & line-ups unveiled - posted 16/08/2006
THE WAREHOUSE PROJECT
October 6th ? December 31st 2006
www.thewarehouseproject.com
Manchester UK
For twelve weeks this city is ours
We can now reveal the venue and the majority of the night time line-ups for Manchesters most ambitious music experience yet. Between Friday 6th October & Monday 1st January The Warehouse Project will be taking over an incredible warehouse space in Manchesters city centre for what will be a new twist to the festival and club/gig experience.
Things are hotting up now as Manchester gets ready for 12 weeks of warehouse action. With the venue now revealed as The Old Brewery (formerly the Boddingtons Brewery) one of Manchesters most iconic landmarks, its time to start spreading the word. Everybody from Manchester knows this legendary site, with its towering chimney peering out over the city, where they made that legendary tonic for over 250 years. For three months they will take a piece of the cities most cherished heritage and catapult it into the twenty first century. We couldnt possibly have asked for a more perfect backdrop for the first Warehouse Project.
The site actually consists of two warehouses, One slightly larger than the other. The larger of the two was where they actually used to make the beer and was known as The Racking Hall, the other is the cold store where the kegs were stored. They have named this one The Box. Most events will feature both, however one or two special events, such as the eagerly anticipated 3 Chairs event, they felt a smaller more intimate vibe suited, so these will just take place in The Box. They will be releasing pictures of the venues online at thewarehouseproject.com over the next few days.
For the full current line ups please check our Gigs and Events section.

BEATPICK.COM : a fairer way of doing business in the music industry - posted 13/06/2006
Beatpick is an inspired response to the rapidly evolving online music industry that will clarify the fog of law and minimise the dangers of exploitation for all those involved.
Tapping into a growing concern that seeks to redress the balance between musicians, customers and record labels, Beatpick.com is a company that promotes a fairer way of doing business in the music industry. Working under the Creative Commons licensing system, the label splits the proceeds of each deal 50-50 with each selected musician and offers a combination of free full album streaming, low download prices, project collaborations and fast commercial music licensing.
From the mainstream to the bizarre, BeatPick.com aims to cover a variety of musical genres. From categories such as ?Chilled to Orchestral?, ?Breakbeats to Synthpop?, ?Rock and Metal? to ?World Music? and ?Glitch to IDM? visitors are encouraged to listen to the complete album before they buy. They may then share purchased music with up to four friends using the free mp3 sender provided. Compared to most Internet websites, which offer mere 30 second snippets of a random selection of tracks, the Beatpick system allows visitors to enjoy all of the music available on the website. Thus music can be bought and licensed at the click of a mouse.
The music industry has been infamously slow to address developments in customer habits and the web?s architecture. Although both the indies and the majors have now made some half-hearted attempts to accommodate digital developments, their traditional business models depend on exclusive and rabidly enforced control of a musician?s works. Beatpick are a new record label who take a different approach. They use Creative Commons licenses in conjunction with a player designed to help sharing, and reject DRM. In addition, all music can be streamed for free.

The original Wall of Sound signing Mekon returns with his third studio album Something Came Up this July 17th on PIAS/Wall of Sound. This time the former Member of Psychic TV and Agent Provocateur, Mekon (aka John Gosling) has collaborated with some of the more eccentric names in modern music.
Shimmering amongst Mekon?s dark and menacing electronics are such esteemed music legends as Afrika Bambaata, Roxanne Shante, Marc Almond and Kevin Mooney. Not to mention the first double A single which features Blood On The Moon, the inspired collaboration between Bobby Gillespie and Suicide\'s Alan Vega. Backed by the infectious Boy Bitten featuring newcomer Phillippa, the single comes complete with remixes from arthouse New Yorker\'s Inflagranti and London\'s very own Padded Cell and is released two weeks ahead of the album on 3rd July.
The album Something Came Up follows on 17th July (PIAS/WoS).
RICHARD POLSON : Rest In Peace - posted 09/05/2006
It is with great grief and sadness that we would like to inform you that Richard Polson suddenly and unexpectedly passed away last Thursday night due to natural causes. It was a peaceful death and for this we are truly grateful. Richard touched so many people throughout his life, and the light that
shone from within him will continue to lead us all.
We ask that you could please take a moment to remember this special human being, and to respect the pain that his family, girlfriend and friends are feeling at this extremely sad time. Richard taught many people valuable lessons in life, respect, kindness, generosity and joy. He will never be forgotten by those who loved him, and we know his life will not have been in vein, as his spirit will live on amongst us all forever!
Richard was very much one of electronic musics\' unsung heroes. A pioneer who preferred to let the music do the talking, he has helped shaped the face of British electronic music over the past twelve years. His music and spirit has inspired many others to continue his legacy for what he believed to be true and just: music uncluttered by ego and hype.
May his journey through the stars be peaceful.

DISSONANZE 06 : the 6th editon of Rome's Electronic Music and Visual Arts Festival - posted 01/04/2006
Dissonanze is the electronic music and digital art festival of Rome. A festival that experiments with the relationship between creativity and technology whilst researching the unusual connections between sight and sound.
As well as famous artists and successful art works, the festival presents emerging artists, previews, original collaborations and site specific productions, commissioned by Dissonanze for the different and unusual spaces that host the event.
?This is our visual music!? is the claim for this edition.
Dissonanze 6, in fact, continues the journey through new declinations and drifts of sound and visual art which, again, will be presented in the architecture of the magnificent Palazzo dei Congressi. The curators? aim has been to stimulate the artists toward new collaborations and unseen creations, in order to make create within the white marble of the Palazzo, new examples of ?visual music?, ?total? shows that distort the normal dimensions of perception, creating a new dialogue between artists and their public.
And everything will happen in the name of experimentation as much as in that of entertainment.

ENCOMPASS 2006 : line up announced - posted 14/03/2006
In 2005 Encompass launched what many knew was much needed and long overdue in the capital: a London festival with a vision of bringing music, art, business and parties under one unifying umbrella. Hosting 19 record label showcases across 6 venues with some 90 performances the music formed the nucleus around which everything else revolved.
Now Encompass plan to do it all again and unite the elements of cutting edge music in a city that lives and breathes music. On the nights of Thursday 11th, Friday 12th and Saturday 13th of May seven venues will host official label showcases in the surrounding Shoreditch area alongside the workshop and seminars that will take place during the day of Saturday 13th May at Shoreditch Town Hall.
This year the line-up once again reads like a who?s who of electronic and leftfield music. With label showcases from NON-STOP, TUMMY TOUCH, WARP, LOOSE CHANGE, DC RECORDINGS, LEFTROOM, CHANNEL ZERO, FACTOR CITY, TIRK, INNERVISIONS, COMPOST, TYKE, SOMA, BORDER COMMUNITY, SAMURAI.FM and GHOSTLY over three nights of quality music programming, the second instalment of Encompass will once again shine the spotlight on the Capital?s diverse club scene. From Factor City?s Catalan take on house, a rare live appearance from Warp?s B12 electronic pioneers, the grime and dub step of Plastician (formerly Plasticman), the wonderful shuffle of James Holden?s electronic groove, the eclectic downtempo sounds of Beanfield and Ross Allen, the bombastic bass/electro of Depth Charge, gorgeous groove of Dixon and Ame, hip hop stylings of DJ Vadim and Mark Rae and Soma?s techno assault Encompass will once again be the cutting edge festival for London to embrace and party.

ePM Online : ePM Online distributing realtones throughout Europe - posted 28/01/2006
ePM Online now offers realtone distribution to its labels and partners via a deal with Arvato (who deal represent T-Mobile, Vodafone, plus numerous other mobile phones providers) throughout Europe. With a potential customer base of over 100 million people this new deal will give ePM Online?s 50+ independent labels the opportunity to make their music available via mobile platforms.
Confirming the deals, ePM Online?s Oliver Way says. ?This is a fantastic opportunity for our labels and artists to increase their revenues across the constantly evolving and growing mobile network markets throughout Europe. Last year there were 71 million downloads to mobile phones in Japan alone and that figure is rapidly growing throughout the rest of the world.?
Confirming the partnership, Avato adds: \"Especially in the Netherlands where dance music is very popular Arvato-Mobile is working on expanding and enriching their existing mobile content portfolio (ringtones, realtones, video-ringtones, fulltracks and streaming/downloadable video). Therefore Arvato-Mobile is happy to have signed a deal with ePM Online, this enables them to offer a wide range of mobile content based on the electronic music made available by ePM Online.\"

JAMES HOLDEN : gets at the controls! - posted 14/01/2006
James Holden is set to follow up 2003 Balance 005 mix CD with a brand new double CD offering called At The Controls. ?The idea was just to make a compilation that Id think is good?, states James by matter of fact. ?Mostly I hate DJ mixes, so that?s the main thing that influenced this - trying to justify my 2 CDs with a load of music that I really love. Through Resist weve been able to get permission to use some tracks I never dreamt Id be able to get, so its turned out being a cross section of music that Im really happy with. Lot?s of it comes from the little family of friends around Border Community. And recommendations from my hairdresser!? he says jokily. ?And of course the depths of my iTunes folder - things Ive been listening to for 10 years wanting to put on a mix CD.?
From the classic minimalism of Plastikman to the lo-fi electronica of Fennesz we find Aphex Twin nestling next to Malcolm Middleton the cultural dub of Massive Attack v. Mad Professor melting into Death in Vegas, new German aesthetics from BPitch Control rising stars Apparat and Paul Kalkbrenner, new school electro from Geneva?s Water Lilly, trance inducing ?lost? gems and of course the odd smattering of Border Community exclusives from Petter, Holden and label buddy Nathan Fake.
James Holden At The Controls is released on Resist on 13th March.

MISS KITTIN : Live @ Sonar - posted 30/11/2005
Since the release of her debut solo album I Com in 2004, Caroline Herve (aka Miss Kittin) has been on a mission. A global mission of shaking ass, spinning great music, getting on the microphone and turning dark boxes into sweat-filled dancefloors of euphoria. One such DJ moment was perfectly captured on a late sunny afternoon in Barcelona, June 2005. With people spilling out of the tent even before she was set to play and many more desperately trying to squeeze themselves in, Miss Kittin simply did what she does best and most of us spent the rest of Sonar talking about it. Now the experience of that amazing sun drenched evening with Miss Kittin at the helm on both decks and microphone including a special guest appearance from her long-time partner in rhyme, The Hacker can be shared the world over. If you were there, relive the moment. If not?where were you?
From the opening electronic atmospherics of Tim Hecker to the futuristic Kraftwerkesque stylings of Arpanet, the deliciously warm funked up bass of Aphex Twin?s Window Licker, the cool minimalism of Sleep Archive, Ricardo Villalobos?s twisted dark grooves and plenty of re-worked live versions of her own tracks and collaborations (including technical screw-ups and Miss Kittin engaging with the audience) we witness Caroline Herve providing impromptu new vocals to her classic catalogue before closing with the aural bliss of Boards of Canada re-wiring Boom Bip.
Miss Kittin Live @ Sonar is released on novamute on 30th January 2006.
